Movies to Watch Out For in 2018

2018, the year everyone has been waiting for. A fresh new year. And with a new year comes, of course, new movies!

Here are some movies to look out for in 2018:

Insidious: The Last Key

Release Date: January 5

The fourth addition to the Insidious film series, this horror movie is about a woman named Elise Rainier, the main character from the Insidious movie series, who investigates her family home rumored to be haunted.

Maze Runner: Death Cure

Release Date: January 26

The third and final film in the Maze Runner movies based on the bestselling book series, this science-fiction movie follows the same group of characters in a dystopian Earth destroyed by a disease called the Flare. Originally set to be released last year, the release date was pushed back after the injury of lead actor Dylan O’Brien. “I am so excited! I’ve been waiting forever for it. But it’s going to be so sad,” states Janine Jbeili’21.

Black Panther

Release Date: February 16

Marvel is releasing plenty of movies in 2018. This fantasy-action movie is a solo film for the Marvel superhero Black Panther. It follows the superhero as he defends his nation, Wakanda, and the world from two old enemies.

Wreck it Ralph 2

Release Date: March 9

This animated movie is a sequel of the Disney movie Wreck it Ralph. The sequel is going to follow the two main characters Ralph and Vanellope as they go on an Internet adventure to fix an arcade game. “I love Wreck it Ralph!” Raquel Davis’21 adds.
Sherlock Gnomes

Release Date: March 23

Do you remember watching Gnomeo and Juliet in 2011? Well, a sequel has finally been made! This animated movie, Sherlock Gnomes, is about the pair from the previous movie, Gnomeo and Juliet, working together with the legendary Sherlock Gnomes to find their missing friends and family.

Release Date: May 4


This is another Marvel movie being released this year. This fantasy-action movie follows all the Marvel superheroes as they battle their final and most deadly enemy—Thanos, before he destroys the universe and life forever.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Release Date: May 25

This science-fiction film in the Stars Wars movie series is about the early adventures and life of Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrissian.  The movie will be taking place when Solo is in his early 20s. The younger character will be played by Alden Ehrenreich, and Calrissian is being played by Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino. “I am eagerly anticipating [this movie],” states freshman history teacher Mr. Sartori.

Deadpool 2

Release Date: June 1

This action and comedy movie is another movie of Marvel’s. It is the sequel to the first movie, Deadpool. This movie will follow the hilarious mercenary Wade Wilson, more commonly known as Deadpool, as he embarks on a new adventure. Ryan Reynolds continues to play the lead.

Release Date: June 15


This is the movie that everyone, young or old, has been waiting for. The animated film is a sequel to the first film, The Incredibles, which came out in 2004. This movie will closely follow Elastigirl as Mr. Incredible tries to take care of their three children. “I can’t wait for this movie. It’s been 14 years since the first one,” states Molly Gallagher’19.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Release Date: June 22

A week later, this science fiction and action movie comes out. This movie is a sequel to the first Jurassic World movie, which came out in 2015. The film follows the couple from the first movie as they attempt to save dinosaurs from an erupting volcano, and come to face more fatalities in the process. “I enjoyed the first Jurassic World so I’m excited to see what dinosaur mishap happens next!” states Anja Kranenburg’21.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Release Date: July 6

Marvel releases yet another big movie on July 6th, 2018. This action film is a sequel to the first Ant-Man movie. It follows the superhero Ant-Man, and his new love interest Hope, the Wasp, as they work together to uncover secrets from the past.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

Release Date: July 13

This animated movie is released a week later, and is the third film in the Hotel Transylvania movie series. This movie follows the monster family as they take a summer vacation on a monster cruise ship. But, of course, the vacation turns bad as a mysterious new character, with a secret dangerous to monsterkind, is introduced to the family as the captain of the ship.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Release Date: November 16

This fantasy film is the second in the Fantastic Beasts movie series, a spinoff of the classic Harry Potter books and movies. All the movies in this new series take place before Harry Potter is born. This movie follows the magizoologist Newt Scamander, the main character from the first movie, as he teams up with the younger Albus Dumbledore to battle the draconian Gellert Grindelwald. “I’m very happy about [this movie] because Harry Potter is my life,” states Emma Bassett’21.

Overall, 2018 will be an exciting year of new movies. So, go watch one of them with your friends or family! Who knows what will be revealed in each one? “I love movies,” concludes Lea Gagnon’21. “They are a daily inspiration to me.”
