When December finally arrived, it was officially appropriate to get in the Christmas spirit. And what better place to get in the spirit than New York City? The IHA community is lucky to have such easy access to the Big Apple, especially during the holidays. The city being less than an hour’s drive, makes it entirely possible to have that movie-like holiday in New York City. Here are the five things you need to try in the city around Christmas time:
-
Rockefeller Center
Each year, Rockefeller Center, located at 50th Street and 5th Avenue, puts up a gigantic tree, decorated with colorful lights. It is the perfect family photo opportunity. The tree is set right behind a small ice rink. If you’re willing to wait in a bit of a line, you might even get a spot on the ice. Prices range from $15-$32 per person and $12 for skate rentals, for a fun skating session.
- Bryant Park
For the people who aren’t looking to wait on long lines at Rockefeller Center, but still want a NYC skating experience, there is always Bryant Park. Located at 40th Street and 5th Avenue, Bryant Park is practically guaranteed to be less crowded than Rockefeller Center. The best part is that skating admission is free. However, you will pay a little more to rent skates at about $20 a pair. Aside from the rink, Bryant Park houses winter shops, a carousel, and games that might be more enjoyable in the warmer seasons.
- Department Store Windows
If you’re looking for something amazing to try, check out the windows of the department stores you pass that line the sidewalks. With beautifully intricate Christmas-themed displays, and colorful lights and décor, they are sure to impress. Some of the best include Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s, Tiffany’s, Lord and Taylor, and Bloomingdale’s. All the windows are a great way to enjoy with family and friends.
-
The Radio City Christmas Spectacular
While the outdoors are great for ice skating rinks and Christmas tree gazing, New York can be rather cold in December. Take a break from the frost by seeing a show or two. One of the most famous is the Radio City Christmas Spectacular performed at Radio City Music Hall. The famous Rockettes are most well known for their festive dancing and amazing kick line. The show also includes singing and elaborate sets. Tickets average about a $100. It is the perfect family experience that no one should miss.
- Nutcracker
Another famous Christmas show in New York City is The Nutcracker, performed by the New York City Ballet at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts. The ballet costs anywhere from $45-$265.
