Joel Burger and Ashley King got engaged in October and posed by a Burger King sign for a pun-filled engagement photograph. An article about the Illinois couple was published in the State Journal-Register. The popular burger chain found out about the engagement and reached out to the couple via Skype.
“When we heard about the happy Burger-King couple, we felt an overwhelming urge to celebrate their upcoming marriage,” a Burger King spokesperson explained to the State Journal. “On so many levels it felt like fate; they found each other and their story found us.
“All we ask in return is that they live happily ever after,” the spokesperson continued. “And maybe name their first child Chicken Fry.”
The couple has known each other since kindergarten. They grew up together in New Berlin, Illinois but did not start dating until college.
King recalls an incident in fifth grade when she and Burger were asked to stand as student council representatives during an assembly. “He[the motivational speaker] said our names to the school,” King described to CNN, “and then laughed and pronounced that together we were Burger King.”
The couple has chosen to combine their last names when they get married so they will officially be Mr. and Mrs. Burger-King. There is no word yet if they will name their first child Chicken Fry.
