You can always count on a few missteps at a music awards show – for some reason the singing group loves to really push the envelope on the red carpet – and it doesn’t always work out just as planned. That proved to be the case for a handful of stars at the Grammy Awards on Feb. 8 in Los Angeles, California.

Grammys’ new artist of the year, Sam Smith, looked dapper in a white bow tie along with his traditional tuxedo as he managed his nerves going up against not only music legends, but his idols.

Speaking of music legends, Beyonce and Miley Cyrus went for black — Cyrus sporting strategic cutouts, and the queen in a low-V neck embellished look with a train from Proenza Schouler.

Brandy Clark showed off a killer pair of metallic silver Prada pumps under a sparkly, second-skin silver-and-black gown, while Nick Jonas was in a light gray tweed suit with a touch of yellow and ultra-skinny trousers.

And for hair, let’s not forget about Ariana Grande and her signature high ponytail!  To match her infamous hair style, she was wearing a white and silver Versace gown with a cut out back – and with Big Sean by her side. “I’m wearing Saint Laurent man, head to toe,” he added, speaking of his black tuxedo.

Known for leg bearing, Pharrell Williams didn’t break from tradition. He was dressed in a short gray suit, matching bow tie and shoes from Adidas.

Speaking of tuxedos, they aren’t just for the guys these days.

Charlie XCX did a white tailed-tux trouser look justice from one of her favorites, Moschino, paired with a bright pink bow tie and blush fur stole. Also rocking the look, Pitch Perfect’s Anna Kendrick sported a black satin tux with a deep V-neck plunge.

As for color, that was all Katy Perry. She had her violet hair tousled to her shoulders which popped against her silver sheer dress with swingy embellishments. It was straight from the runway of Zuhair Murad.

“I just want to shine like a diamond,” she said, referring to one of her songs.

Perry was greeted on the red carpet by Nicki Minaj in black Tom Ford. Along with Minaj, Ford dressed fellow singer Jennifer Hudson in a stunning bright white strapless dress with her short hair as a  perfect complement.

And for Meghan Trainor, she not only brought the bass, but had her dad there too. She was seen wearing a tight sheer mini skirt under a full black, long-sleeve overskirt adorned with black lace for her first Grammys walk.

Unexpectedly, Lady Gaga steered away from her usual look, wearing a slightly more sophisticated gray gown. She showed off a high slit in Brandon Maxwell, dripping in Lorraine Schwartz diamonds and emeralds.

Taylor Swift’s turquoise Elie Saab dress drew a lot of attention, mostly positive, but still some twitter users disagreed: “curtains over a mini dress,” one tweeter said of her sleeveless short- long look.

Kim Kardashian’s gold John Paul Gaultier slightly resembled a bathrobe, but her new shorter hair looked great.

“I love how sparkly it is,” she said. “I love it.”

Iggy Azalea’s hair? That was a big no. It was a thick braid wound around her head that resembled a bird’s nest/ crown-type look. She paired this eclectic hair style against a tight bright, blue custom Armani Prive gown.
